Massacre at Attica Prison, New York
The Attica Prison Rebellion, which began on September 9, 1971, was ended by armed force on this day when New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller sent in armed state police troopers to retake the prison.
An estimated 1,000 inmates had taken control of parts of the prison and taken 42 prison officials hostage to demand an end to inhumane conditions in the prison (which included serious overcrowding and a lack of adequate shower and toilet facilities).
Twenty nine prisoners and 10 prison employees were killed in the raid. The Attica Rebellion remains one of the most serious and most famous prison riots in American history.
