Holyoke, Mass. Allows Rent-Free Catholic School Classes in its Public Schools

The mayor of Holyoke, Massachusetts, angrily rejected protests by the Massachusetts ACLU over the city allowing the Roman Catholic Diocese to hold parochial school classes in its public school buildings rent-free.

“I’d do it again,” said the mayor.

The head of the Massachusetts ACLU, an Episcopal minister, charged that the practice violated both the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution and the state Constitution.
