HHS, CDC Remove HIV from List that Bars Visas

 

The Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control on this day removed HIV from the list of illness that bar the granting of visas to people seeking to visit the U.S.

President Ronald Reagan’s administration added HIV to the list on August 28, 1987. The result was discrimination against homosexuals, one of the largest groups of people with an HIV/AIDS diagnosis.
