United Nations World Press Freedom Day
On this day, the United Nations declared May 3rd to be the annual World Press Freedom Day. The World Press Freedom Committee was formed on May 9, 1976.
The most important freedom of the press cases in the U.S. include Near v. Minnesota, the pivotal decision on freedom of the press, June 1, 1931; New York Times v. United States, which overturned the government’s attempt to bar publication of the Pentagon Papers, June 30, 1971; and Nebraska Press Association v. Stuart, which overturned prior restraints in a criminal case, June 30, 1976.
