Senate Intelligence Committee Releases Report on CIA Torture Program
The Senate Intelligence Committee on this day released its long-awaited report on the CIA torture program in the war on terrorism.
The released version of the report was a heavily redacted 525 page summary of the full 6,000 page report. The release involved a long battle between the Senate Committee and the CIA, as well as disputes between Democratic and Republican members of the committee. Senator Diane Feinstein, then chair of the committee accused the CIA of spying on the committee’s investigation in violation of the law (March 11, 2014).
The report focused almost entirely on the CIA. Some critics argued that by doing so it absolved members of the George W. Bush presidential administration of their responsibility in authorizing torture in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. See the infamous “torture memo” of August 1, 2002.
In 2019 the film The Report, starring Adam Driver and Annette Benning, provided a gripping account of the behind-the-scenes drama about the release of the Senate Torture Report.
