First Gay Pride March Proposed

A Gay Pride March was proposed at a meeting of the Eastern Regional Conference of Homofile Organizations (ERCHO) on this day.

Sunday, June 28, 1970, was selected as the day for the first Gay Pride March in New York City to commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Inn Riots in New York City that began on June 28, 1969, and which sparked the national lesbian and gay rights movement. Chicago Gay Liberation would hold a march in Chicago the day before, on June 27, 1970.

The first lesbian and gay rights movement in the world originated in Berlin, Germany, in the 1860s. This included the invention of the word “homosexuality.” Read Robert Beachy, Gay Berlin: Birthplace of a Modern Identity (2014).
