International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
The United Nations on this day designated the day as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The date was selected to mark the 1960 assassination of the three Mirabal sisters, Dominican Republic political activists, on orders by Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo. Women activists had marked the day since 1981.
The U.S. Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act, the first such legislation in American history, on September 13, 1994.
