“The CIA Report the President Doesn’t Want You to Read”
New York’s Village Voice published on this day a summary of the Pike Committee (established on February 19, 1975) report on abuses by U.S. intelligence agencies.
The Voice headline read, “The CIA Report the President Doesn’t Want You to Read.” In fact, the House of Representatives had voted not to release its own report, on January, 29, 1976. President Gerald Ford also did not want the report released. CBS reporter Daniel Schorr had been given a leaked copy of a summary of the report to the Voice and, as a result, lost his job and was threatened with jail for contempt of Congress.
The Pike Committee report has never been released. The committee’s findings, however, were reported in the media, including The New York Times, in early 1976. The reports of the Senate Church Committee (established on January 27, 1975) were released and are still a valuable source of information on the history of the abuses of the CIA and other intelligence agencies.
