Dr. George Tiller, Abortion Provider, Shot and Killed

Dr. George Tiller, an abortion provider in Wichita, Kansas, was murdered on this day by a radical anti-abortion activist.

At the time of his murder, his clinic was one of only three in the entire country that provided late-term abortions. He was the eighth doctor or abortion clinic staff person to be murdered by anti-abortion radicals since the early 1980s. Although never widely labeled as such, the campaign of murders and other violence directed at abortion providers was a case of domestic terrorism.

In an earlier instance of anti-abortion violence, Dr. Barnett Slepian was murdered near Buffalo, New York, on October 23, 1998
