First Woman Vice Presidential Candidate: Geraldine Ferraro

 

Democratic Party presidential candidate Walter Mondale announced on this day that he had chosen Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro to be his Vice Presidential running mate.

Ferraro was the first woman nominated as a candidate for the office by one of the two major political parties.

Walter Mondale and Ferraro, however, were defeated by President Ronald Reagan in the November election.
