Georgia High School Holds Its First Integrated Prom

A small group of black and white students at Wilcox County High School, located 160 miles south of Atlanta, Georgia, broke tradition and organized the school’s first interracial prom.

Students were fed up with their segregated proms and decided it was time to host one prom, with the support of the Southwest Georgia Project (SWGAP).

The Southwest Georgia Project was organized in 1961 by Charles and and Shirley Sherrod, who were active in the civil rights movement at that time. SWGAP is a human rights and community organizing effort.
