Up to 2 Million People “March for Our Lives” in Nationwide Protest for Gun Control

Up to 2 million people, led by high school students, marched in an estimated 800 cities in the U.S. on this day demanding effective gun control. The march was named “March for Our Lives.”

The march was a follow-up on the March 14th protest in which an estimated 1 million high school students walked out of their schools, in many cases risking possible school discipline, to demand effective gun control. The event on March 14th marked one month since the mass shooting incident at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 people were shot and killed.

In addition to the main event in Washington, DC, and all the major U.S. cities, marches were held in Portland, Maine.;, Des Moines; Fargo, North Dakota; Mobile, Alabama; Bend, Oregon; and San Juan Puerto Rico.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas, for whom the Parkland High School is named, was a lifelong activist on women’s suffrage, preserving the Everglades, and civil liberties. Read more about her here.
