Groups Oppose Public School Uniforms

Parents, students and civil libertarians demonstrated in front of Stuyvesant High School on this day to protest a New York City School Board proposal that elementary school students be required to wear uniforms.

Marie Gangemi, parent of a six-year-old child, said the proposal infringed on her rights as a parent to guide her child on personal matters. Others charged that the schools had more pressing problems, including overcrowding, a lack of adequate books and supplies, and gang violence.
